Strategies

How Each Strategy Works.

marketOutlook offers six distinct screener strategies, each designed to surface a different type of trading opportunity. Here's what each one does and when to use it.

📈

Momentum

Best for: trend riding

Ranks stocks by a composite RSI score — the average of RSI-22, RSI-44, and RSI-66. A high composite score means the stock has sustained upward momentum across short, medium, and long timeframes simultaneously.

Formula (RSI-22 + RSI-44 + RSI-66) / 3
Composite > 60 — strong upward momentum across all timeframes
Composite < 40 — bearish pressure dominating

Breakout

Best for: catching breakouts early

A composite breakout score combining four factors: proximity to the 52-week high, volume surge vs average, 10-day rate of change, and MA alignment (above MA50 and MA200). Higher score = stronger breakout candidate.

Score components Dist from 52W high + Vol ratio + ROC 10d + MA alignment
Score > 70 — all four factors aligned bullishly
Score 40–70 — partial alignment, watch for catalyst

Mean Reversion

Best for: buying dips in healthy stocks

Filters for stocks that are oversold (Composite RSI < 40) but not in a freefall (ROC-10 > −8%). These are candidates that have pulled back from strength and may bounce back toward their mean.

Filter Composite < 40 AND ROC-10 > −8%
Very low composite with mild pullback — highest reversion potential
Avoid if ROC-10 < −8% — could be a structural breakdown

Volume Surge

Best for: spotting unusual activity

Surfaces stocks where today's volume is at least 1.5× the 20-day average. Unusual volume often precedes significant price moves and can signal institutional accumulation or distribution.

Filter Vol Ratio ≥ 1.5× (today's vol / 20-day avg vol)
High vol + positive ROC — likely accumulation
High vol + negative ROC — possible distribution or sell-off

Trend Following

Best for: riding confirmed uptrends

Shows only stocks above both their 50-day and 200-day moving averages with a bullish MACD histogram. This triple confirmation reduces false signals — all three trend filters must align.

Filter Price > MA50 AND Price > MA200 AND MACD trend = bullish
All three conditions met — strong structural uptrend
Watch composite score to prioritize the strongest within the list

52-Week High Breakout

Best for: near-breakout candidates

Stocks within 5% of their 52-week high with elevated volume (≥ 1.3× average). Proximity to the annual high with rising volume is a classic precursor to a continuation breakout.

Filter Dist from 52W High ≥ −5% AND Vol Ratio ≥ 1.3×
Within 1–2% of high with strong volume — breakout imminent
3–5% from high — building base, watch daily

Combining Strategies.

No single strategy works in all market conditions. Here's a practical way to combine them:

Bull market

Momentum + Trend Following — stick with what's already working.

Sideways / choppy

Mean Reversion + Volume Surge — buy the dips with volume confirmation.

Early recovery

52W High Breakout + Breakout Score — find leaders emerging from bases.
